My Bio

The art of colored pencils seems intuitive. The beautiful array of Prismacolor Premier hues evokes memories of my beloved box of 64 Crayola crayons, and the hours spent coloring with Midnight Blue, Forest Green, Periwinkle, Spring Green, Brick Red, Bittersweet, Silver… every color lifted my spirits. The waxy feel of Prisma pencils when the paper refuses to absorb more layers are muscle memory of childhood hands blending crayons on coloring books to get just the right shades of leafy green or sky blue. The reference photo trace is reminiscent of coloring carefully in the lines to achieve that perfect contrast or sharp edge.

My focus is the basics of light, shadow, color theory, and the origin of an object in its environment. I prefer to use my own photos as a reference in which strong contrast and sharp edges create the image. Inspiration is everywhere because in my mind’s eye I draw what I see.

During the CoVID pandemic isolation, I unearthed colored pencils from storage that I used as a college art student 40 years ago. It had been decades since I drew anything but a flow chart and colorful power point presentations, but in my mind’s eye I never stopped illustrating.
