In 2010, after relocating from the San Francisco Bay Area to Summerfield, a community within Tigard, Oregon, I “made time to draw.” Knowing I had always dabbled with drawing, my sister gifted me with a “how to” book. She is an artist.
Thereafter, at a local art supply store, I came upon another drawing instruction book authored by the late Oregon artist Claudia Nice. Seeing the chance to learn more, I contacted her, signed up for, and attended one of her workshops at her Brightwood Studio near Mt. Hood. A great experience. Along the way, I’ve found artists are most often willing to offer any help or guidance about art if simply asked!
With incentive to find life subjects to draw, I began asking neighbors if I could draw their dog’s portrait. Initially, I used family photos to draw; I quickly decided my drawing was better supported by me taking the photos of the subject. Lighting. Reflective details in the eyes. The graphite process suited me. I enjoy taking what for me is the significant time needed for these drawings, and I particularly enjoy listening to background music in an otherwise quiet studio setting.
I have since studied with Canadian conservation artist David Kittler. A drawing session with Oregon artist Robert Paulmenn reinforced drawing basics and composition. And I’ve learned more about colored pencils and their versatility in workshops with Kristy Kutch and with Cynthia Knox.
My “home group” is with the Summerfield Creative Art Guild. I am an active member and am one of the organizers of what has become the Guild’s annual autumn 3-day art show. My drawings have been displayed in the Summerfield Art Gallery and have been featured in the Astoria Open Studio Tour as part of my association with the Astoria Art Loft.
